(June 9, 2012)… The Six Nations Chief remained within one point of division-leading Brooklin and Peterborough after Sunday night’s 13-13 tie with the Kitchener-Waterloo Kodiaks. The Chiefs earned the valuable point on Kasey Beirnes’ goal at 9:40 of overtime.
The Chiefs’ offense was powered by three members of the Rochester Knighthawks. Craig Point scored three times, while Cody Jamieson (1+3) and Alex “Kedoh” Hill (2+2) recorded four-point efforts. Rochester’s Stephen Keogh also chipped in one assist in the Major Series Lacrosse game at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena. The contest featured two other Knighthawks with Sid Smith anchoring the Chiefs’ defense and Jamie Batson adding a spark on the Kodiaks’ backend.
Kitchener-Waterloo opened the game with consecutive goals by Brandon Ivey and Joey Cupido to take a 2-0 lead 4:15 into the contest. Six Nations answered with four straight goals, including markers by Knighthawks’ Point and Hill, to go along with tallies from Rhys Duch and Mat MacLeod. Point scored his first of the contest following a Kitchener-Waterloo goal and the Kodiaks would add one more before the end of the quarter to trim the deficit to 5-4.
The outcome of the second was the same as the first with Six Nations outscoring the Kodiaks 5-4 to build a 10-8 advantage. The Chiefs again pulled in front by two goals by opening the quarter with two of the first three goals. Kitchener-Waterloo was undeterred and answered with goals by Aaron Wilson and Jamie Rooney to tie the game at seven. According to the script, Six Nations pulled back in front by two goals with Jamieson setting up both. Point made it 8-7 at 13:02 and Marty Hill connected for his lone goal of the game at 16:21. Wilson got one back for the Kodiaks, but Alex “Kedoh” Hill beat Evan Kirk with 1:51 to play in the second for a 10-8 lead.
Pat Saunders led the third-period comeback for Kitchener-Waterloo as he scored twice to tie the game at 10. When Dhane Smith scored on the power play just 49 seconds later, the Kodiaks seized the lead at 11-10. This time it was Six Nations getting the game-tying goal at 14:13 on Jamieson’s tally from Clay Hill. Ivey and Colin Doyle traded goals in the final four minutes to force overtime.
The Kodiaks retook the lead at 13-12 on Jason Mainer’s power-play goal at 1:33. Yet, Beirnes’ goal on Colin Doyle’s fourth point (2+2) of the game denied Kitchener-Waterloo the win. Goalies Kirk and Mike Poulin (Six Nations) made six of their 32 saves in OT. The Kodiaks improved to 3-3-1 with the tie.
