(July 26, 2012)… Five days ago, Warren Hill was leading the Iroquois Nationals to a bronze medal at the 2012 U-19 World Lacrosse Championships in Finland. Yet, with limited rest since returning to Six Nations, Hill made a season-high 57 saves Wednesday in a 10-8 win over the Peterborough Lakers. The road win gave the Six Nations Arrows a 2-0 lead over the Lakers in the Junior “A” Semifinals.
“Man, that was huge. It was the second game in two nights with most of our boys still fighting jet lag,” said Arrows Head Coach and former Rochester Knighthawk Marshall Abrams. “We have a much-needed night off right now before returning back home on Friday.”
Hill and eight of his teammates returned to the Six Nations Arrows for a Game 1 win over Peterborough Tuesday. Then it was off to Peterborough for Game 2. Randy Staats, one of Hill’s teammates in Finland, led the Nationals with 11 points in four preliminary round games. He also led the Arrows in regular season scoring and has not missed a beat since rejoining the team. After a five-point effort in Game 1, he scored two goals Wednesday which included an insurance goal late in the game. The Arrows also had strong games from Iroquois Nationals star Brendan Bomberry (1+3) and Brendon Montour (three goals).
Six Nations broke the game open in the second period with a 3-0 run. Quinn Powless, Staats and Rodd Squire netted goals in the penalty-filled second, which included a combined 41 penalty minutes. Squire’s goal was the key marker, as he netted a goal at 6:35 while shorthanded. The tally gave the Arrows an 8-5 lead. The Lakers were able to stay close, notching two of the final three goals to make it 9-6.
In the third, Peterborough got within one on goals by Turner Evans and Zach Herreweyers. Evans, who played for Team Canada in Finland, scored twice. Zac Currier assisted on the Evans’ goal at 1:55 to give him a team-high four points (3+1). Staats, however, netted a goal at 14:51 to give the Arrows a 10-8 advantage.
The game opened with each team scoring twice before Six Nations strung together goals by Shane Simpson, Montour and Mike Miller to take a 5-2 lead. Yet, Currier brought his team back with consecutive goals before the end of the period. His first of the game was shorthanded at 17:41. He followed that up with a goal at 19:26 and the Lakers were down only 5-4. But the second was where the Arrows would increase their lead, which was large enough to withstand a late Peterborough challenge.
The Arrows will try to take a commanding 3-0 lead in the best-of-seven series with Game 3 set for Friday, July 27th at 8:00 p.m. at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena.
